Pau d'Arco and Candida: A Natural Antifungal Solution?

Candida overgrowth — candidiasis — happens when Candida albicans, a yeast normally present in the human microbiome, proliferates unchecked. It can affect the digestive tract, mouth, and skin. Pau d'Arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa) has a long history of traditional antifungal use, and modern lab research has identified specific compounds behind that reputation. This article separates the mechanism research from the marketing claim.
Bioactive Compounds: Lapachol and Beta-Lapachone
Lapachol's studied antifungal mechanism involves interfering with the fungal cell's electron transport chain, disrupting the energy the cell needs to maintain itself and reproduce. Beta-lapachone has been studied for inducing oxidative stress specifically within fungal cells, leading to programmed cell death, without the same effect on healthy human cells in lab models. What the Antifungal Research Actually Shows
- Direct growth inhibition: a 2020 review in Molecules reported that Pau d'Arco extracts showed growth inhibition against eleven fungal and yeast strains in lab testing, including Candida and Aspergillus species.
- Comparison to pharmaceutical antifungals: some lab research describes naphthoquinone activity in the same range as reference antifungal compounds like ketoconazole in vitro. That's a laboratory potency comparison, not a claim that Pau d'Arco tea is a substitute for a prescribed antifungal — it hasn't been tested that way in humans, and no one should stop a prescribed antifungal treatment in favor of tea.
- Biofilm disruption: Candida's biofilm — a protective layer that shields it from treatment — has been reported in lab studies to be disrupted by Pau d'Arco compounds.
- Efflux pump inhibition: some research describes Pau d'Arco compounds inhibiting the "pumps" fungi use to expel antifungal chemicals, a resistance mechanism.
Traditional and Ethnomedical Context
The Guarani and Tupi peoples of South America call the tree tajy — "to have strength and vigor" — and have used bark decoctions for a range of conditions including fungal infections for generations. In Brazilian herbal medicine, Pau d'Arco is a standard traditional recommendation for topical yeast issues. This is traditional-use evidence, not a clinical trial.
The Decoction Method
The active naphthoquinones aren't highly water-soluble, so simple steeping is generally considered insufficient.
- Use about 3 tablespoons of pure inner bark per 4.5 cups of water.
- Bring to a boil in a non-aluminum pot, then reduce heat and simmer 20–25 minutes.
- Strain through a fine mesh filter.
- Traditional-use sources suggest 2–4 cups daily during active management, or 1–2 cups for general wellness — though there's no clinical dosing standard, so start conservatively.

Precautions and Side Effects
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: not recommended — isolated lapachol has shown abortifacient properties in animal studies.
- Blood thinning: mild anticoagulant properties reported; consult a physician if you're on blood thinners or scheduled for surgery.
- GI upset: high doses may cause nausea; reduce dosage if this happens.

Where This Leaves Us
The lab evidence for Pau d'Arco's antifungal mechanism against Candida is unusually substantial — more so than for most other claimed uses on this site. What's still missing is human clinical trial data confirming those lab results translate directly into treating a diagnosed Candida infection. If you suspect an active infection, that's a conversation for a healthcare provider, with Pau d'Arco as, at most, a traditional complement — not a replacement.
